A Honeywell flame scanner is an optical sensor system used in industrial burners, boilers, and furnaces to confirm the presence of an active flame. It watches the burner continuously — reading the ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) light signature of the flame — and triggers a safety shutdown if flame loss is detected.

How a Honeywell Flame Scanner Works

Every Honeywell IFM flame scanner system consists of two main components: a viewing head (the optical sensor positioned near the burner) and a signal processor (typically mounted in the control room or a local panel). The viewing head captures the flame's light signal and sends it to the processor, which analyzes the signal and outputs a flame-present or flame-failure status.


Honeywell flame scanners use three sensing technologies depending on the model:


  • Ultraviolet (UV) detection — best for natural gas, propane, and clean-burning fuels where the flame emits a strong UV signature. Fast response; good discrimination against background radiation.
  • Infrared (IR) detection — better for oil-fired burners and environments with smoke, soot, or particulates that attenuate UV light.
  • Dual UV/IR detection — used when fuel type changes, when ambient conditions are difficult, or when maximum discrimination against false signals is required. Standard on P500 Series processors.
